February Foundations: 6 Ways to Set the Tone for Your Best Year Yet

As we sail through February, many are getting their year underway, setting intentions, making goals and dreaming big. This month marks the ongoing process of laying the foundation for 2024.

Before going further, let me share that, for me, the start of a new year truly begins on January 6th, "the epiphany" in my faith when John the Baptist baptized Christ in the Jordan River. Regardless of your beliefs, this time signifies the turn of another year and a time of renewal. It is when we want to begin the new year with a clean slate, free of negativity, opening the way for goodness and possibility.

On January 6, my church priest blesses parishioners with holy water as a cleansing of the spirit. Other traditions have different practices. Indigenous cultures use sage to smudge their homes, Hindus cleanse themselves in the Ganges, and some sprinkle salt around their room. During these early days of February, the invitation is to identify and release what is no longer serving. Leave it behind; cleanse yourself of what does not and will not serve you well as you step forward in your journey. Consider what you would like to bring in instead.

Now to get practical with some prompts that will set you up for a fantastic year:

1. Reflect and Set Intentions

  • What were your achievements and challenges last year?
  • Set goals for the year ahead, both personal and professional.

2. Establish Realistic Goals

  • Break down yearly goals into achievable tasks.
  • Create a plan for the first few months to kickstart progress.

3. Prioritize Self-Care

  • Take time for yourself: a bath, a favorite meal or a good book.
  • Ensure you are getting enough sleep for body and mind rejuvenation.

4. Connect with Loved Ones

  • Strengthen connections, whether in person or virtually.
  • Share reflections on the past year and listen to others.

5. Embrace a Healthy Lifestyle

6. Celebrate Your Coming Year

  • Celebrate your achievements and any wins so far this year.
  • Acknowledge your growth and resilience.

I hope these prompts help to set you up for a magnificent, productive, healthy, prosperous and creative year ahead!
