First Trimester Prenatal Yoga: 6 Things Moms-to-Be Need to Know

Pregnancy is a wonderful time to practice yoga. During the first trimester many women can and do continue with their normal yoga practice. Here are some tips:

  • Check with your prenatal health care provider. As long as you have the green light for normal exercising, prenatal yoga is a great place to start – or continue.
  • Let your yoga instructor know that you are pregnant so adjustments can be made as needed. As long as you are healthy and your pregnancy is going well during the first trimester, you will find that you will need to make few, if any, adjustments. Use your common sense and avoid anything extreme while pregnant.
  • Pay attention to signs from your body. Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated.
  • If you are new to yoga, take a prenatal yoga class. You will want to learn yoga from a teacher experienced with prenatal yoga.
  • If you are continuing your current yoga practice, also take a prenatal yoga class. You will learn valuable practices to help you throughout your pregnancy, delivery, birth and postpartum.
  • If you feel tired and/or have mild nausea, you may not feel like going to a yoga class. Go anyway! I remember feeling that way when I was pregnant. I always felt better after yoga class.

You will be happy to start prenatal yoga sooner than later!
