Love Hiking? 3 Poisonous Plants to Avoid on Your Family Hike!

When camping or just going for a hike, some common poisonous plants to be aware of are:

  • poison ivy
  • poison oak
  • sumac

These can cause an itchy and painful reaction on exposed skin. Show your kids pictures of the plants so they know what to avoid and help them understand the importance of staying away from unknown plants, especially those with shiny leaves. Dress your kids in long pants and long sleeves to avoid the skin coming in contact with the oils of the plants, which can cause an allergic reaction.

If exposed, wash the skin and clothes immediately to prevent further reaction. For mild reactions Benadryl and hydrocortisone cream are good.
