Even Monkeys Like Coffee: Here's Why Parents Need to Get Their Kids Outside to Play by Mike Prochaska
My daughter, Mary, and I went to Goodwill to look for loose parts for playtime. It was one of the first nice days of spring (finally!) and we needed new buckets because I threw all the broken ones away last fall. The kids play with them all the time, so they get broke and rusted from being outside all year. Here's what I enjoyed most about the day with my daughter:
- It was amazing watching her pick out things – bowls, dishes, pots, spoons – and whatever else she wanted.
- The most amazing part to me was watching her reaction when she found something she really liked!
- Her face lit up as she was telling me the different ideas of things to do with the different bowls, dishes, cups and items she found. For example, she found salt and pepper shakers that I would have never picked out if I went by myself. But she was saying, "Oh, I want this pepper shaker because I can put dirt in it and it will look like pepper."
When we got home, she played in the front yard with a neighbor and all her new treasures. They played restaurant and made different foods with water and food coloring for their stuffed animals. When I checked on them, they had made strong black coffee for their pet monkey who was chilling in a chair, drinking his coffee with sunglasses on and enjoying the sunny day.
Now that is what childhood is all about! Get those kids outside.
