Daylight Saving Time: Tips From a Pediatric Sleep Expert to Make the Time Change a Breeze!

Parents, you have two options when it comes to Daylight Saving Time.

  • If your child is a good sleeper, shift to the new time on Sunday. Wake her and put her to sleep at the same time as always. It usually takes a few days to adjust.
  • Start today! Shift meals, naps, bed and wake times 15 minutes earlier every day so that by Sunday, when we move the clocks one hour ahead, he will wake and go to bed at the usual times.

Here are some bonus secret weapons!

  1. Use room darkening shades to ensure darkness at bedtime and in the morning. I highly recommend these shades for a great easy-to-install solution.
  2. Use a toddler clock as a visual reminder of the β€œright” time to wake. (See the one I recommend below!)
  3. Expose your kids to bright light early in the morning. This helps reset the circadian rhythm, regulated by light and darkness. So get outside!
